How to Build a Simple Website for Your Small Business – Without Being a Web Designer

You’ve probably heard it a hundred times:

“Your business needs a website.”

But if you’re not a designer or developer, the idea can feel overwhelming.

The good news? You don’t need to be a tech expert to build a clean, professional, and effective website for your small business.

In this guide, I’ll walk you through the basics — step by step — so you can get your website online without the stress.

Step 1: Get Clear on What You Actually Need

Before you jump into tools or design, ask yourself a few key questions:

  • What do I want my website to do? (Attract clients, explain services, take bookings?)
  • Who is it for? (What does your ideal customer need to see or understand?)
  • What content do I already have? (Photos, text, logo, testimonials?)

Clarity here will save you hours later.

Pro tip: Don’t try to be everything to everyone. Keep it simple and focused on what your clients need to know.

Step 2: Choose the Right Website Builder

If you’re not hiring a professional (yet), choose a no-code website builder that makes things easy.

Here are a few great options:

  • Webflow – Powerful, professional-looking websites with full design control, but with a steep learning curve
  • Wix – Beginner-friendly with drag-and-drop functionality
  • Squarespace – Elegant templates and easy setup
  • WordPress – Flexible, but with a steeper learning curve

For small business owners, I usually recommend Wix/Squarespace if you just want to get started fast and on your own.

Step 3: Plan Your Website Pages

Most small businesses only need a few essential pages to start:

  1. Homepage – A clear headline, what you offer, and a call-to-action
  2. About – Tell your story, your values, and why clients should trust you
  3. Services – Describe what you offer in simple, benefit-driven language
  4. Contact – Add a form, email, phone number, or booking option

Optional: Testimonials, FAQ, Pricing, Blog, or Portfolio – depending on your business.

Step 4: Write Clear, Friendly Copy

You don’t need to be a copywriter - but you do need to communicate clearly.

Tips for writing your website content:

  • Talk like a human, not a robot
  • Focus on how you help your customers
  • Use short paragraphs and clear headlines
  • Add a call-to-action on every page (e.g. “Book a session” or “Contact me today”)
  • Avoid jargon or vague buzzwords

Step 5: Use High-Quality Visuals

Good photos can elevate your site instantly. If you have professional photos - great. If not, use high-quality stock photos (Unsplash or Pexels are good places to start).

Bonus tip: Add a friendly photo of yourself on the About page. People buy from people they trust.

Step 6: Make Sure It Works on Mobile

More than half of all website traffic happens on mobile devices.

So make sure your site:

  • Loads fast
  • Looks clean on phones
  • Has buttons that are easy to tap
  • Doesn’t rely on text that’s too small or hard to read

Most modern website builders handle this automatically — but always double-check on your own phone.

Step 7: Publish It – and Keep It Simple

Don’t overthink it. You can always improve your website later.

The important thing is to get it live.

Once published, you can start sharing your site with clients, add the link to your email signature, update your Google profile, and use it as the foundation of your online presence.
